The Women’s Game (TWG) is delighted to announce they will be joining forces with Nextmedia to help them grow their online sports portfolio.
TWG began as a part-time project by women’s football fan Ann Odong to provide a platform for fans to access information about women’s football but it quickly grew to be the leading site for W-League and Matildas news, profiles, interviews and analysis.
The successful formula created by Odong will now be brought to all women’s sport and the new website is set to become Australia’s only dedicated women’s sport network.
Nextmedia’s Head of Sport Digital Kevin Airs said women’s sport is bigger than it ever has been.
“We want to lead the way in it growing even more,” Airs said.
“The current world-beating success of The Matildas – together with the phenomenal interest in women’s AFL and women’s cricket – means women’s sport’s time has come.
“It is a brilliant opportunity to help continue to grow women’s sport in Australia and to give it a new dedicated home at Nextmedia,” he said.
While TWG will be a standalone site with sections for main codes including football, netball, cricket, AFL, league and rugby, the content will also feed directly to other Netmedia networks including football site FourFourTwo.
Current, co-editor of TWG Angela Bacic has been appointed the online editor to the existing team and is set to build TWG presence beyond football.
“It is important to keep the essence of TWG, which is our love for supporting women’s sport and celebrating great achievements,” said Bacic.
“Having grown up playing and watching sports, I love what women athletes are able to do and now I want us to continue telling all their stories.”
Bacic along with Cheryl Downes recently took over from founder and long time Editor Odong who stepped down after 9.5 years with TWG.
The site will re-launch in its new home and format on February 1.
