After being taken from the court in the third quarter of the Melbourne Vixens loss to West Coast Fever, the club has announced shooter Mwai Kumwenda has ruptured her ACL.
The 28-year-old will undergo surgery in the coming weeks after scans confirmed the injury to her left knee after she landed awkwardly.
“We are really disappointed for Mwai, who is obviously an integral part of our team, but also such a loved member of the Vixens family,” head coach Simone McKinnis said.
“The support she has received so far from the players and Vixens support staff is a reflection of the person she is, and we will continue that support to ensure a successful rehabilitation program for as long as it takes,” she said.
Kumwenda is the fifth highest goalscorer in the Super Netball this season with 501.
The Vixens play a do or die clash against the Sunshine Coast Lightning on the weekend which is likely to determine if they make the finals series.
