The only downer to their successful season to make finals was the 3-0 loss on Saturday night to Melbourne City.

"I think the first half everyone was disappointed with and in the second half I think we showed who we are as a team," van Egmond said.

While that loss was a bit of dent in their final home, both players are looking forward to being back on that field with their team come Saturday afternoon and are expecting a tough week at training.

"To be honest I don't focus too much on the opposition, I'd rather worry what we're doing and we have a whole week to do that so I'm sure Deansy [Craig Deans] will put us through our paces this week," van Egmond said.

"The message was to put that game behind us so we can move on and start preparing for this week because now none of that season matters so it is just whatever we do from here on out," Simon said.

Newcastle face Sydney FC on Saturday at Leichhardt Oval from 4:45 pm.
