Newcastle Jets players, Gema Simon and Emily van Egmond were just teenagers when the W-league outfit made their last finals appearance.
Simon was 18-years-old while van Egmond was only 15 when they took to the field against Canberra United in the league's first ever finals series.
Unfortunately, Canberra went on to win that game 1-0 courtesy of a Kara Mowbray goal and since that moment, Jets players haven't been treated to another W-League final.
"I remember bits and pieces from the game, I think I kind of took it for granted at that stage because I was so young," Simon said.
"The first season you don't really realise how special it was until you don't get to do it for a very long time," she said.
There have been some close calls in recent seasons.
The Jets have sat just outside the top four for the last two seasons, so when they won 5-1 against Canberra United two weeks ago, it not only meant so much to the players and staff involved with the team but the club, their fans and Newcastle itself.
"It's pretty emotional, to be honest," Simon said.
"It was heartbreaking to go through those (losses), so this year it is a very different feeling but it still hasn't sunk in yet," she said.
Since season one, both players have gone on to achieve great things in football including representing Australia and playing in the UEFA Women's Champions League but neither has played in a W-League final series.
When looking back on season one, both Simon and van Egmond have both grown as players and have taken very different footballing journeys to come full circle with the Newcastle Jets.
Before this season, Van Egmond hadn't played the last three years in Australia, opting to stay in Germany with her Frauen-Bundesliga teams but parted ways with her German club to come back to Newcastle.
"This year has been extremely enjoyable both on and off the field," she said
"Here in Newcastle, we have a great bunch of girls and we've been very fortunate to have four very good internationals come out from America to contribute to that.
"It has been very enjoyable to work and learn with the coaches this season," van Egmond said.

Meanwhile, Simon has played in all 10 W-League season, only having one away from the Jets when she joined Melbourne Victory in 2014 alongside teammate Hannah Brewer.
Simon had the chance to play in the 2014 finals series with Victory but due to chronic fatigue, she couldn't make an appearance.
However, this season hasn't been kind to her either, and she is lucky to be back playing with the Jets after sustaining an injury while playing for Avaldsnes in Norway.
"With my injury I had people telling me that I was going to miss all of W-League so to even be back to be in the position where I'm able to play is pretty special," she said
The only downer to their successful season to make finals was the 3-0 loss on Saturday night to Melbourne City.
"I think the first half everyone was disappointed with and in the second half I think we showed who we are as a team," van Egmond said.
While that loss was a bit of dent in their final home, both players are looking forward to being back on that field with their team come Saturday afternoon and are expecting a tough week at training.
"To be honest I don't focus too much on the opposition, I'd rather worry what we're doing and we have a whole week to do that so I'm sure Deansy [Craig Deans] will put us through our paces this week," van Egmond said.
"The message was to put that game behind us so we can move on and start preparing for this week because now none of that season matters so it is just whatever we do from here on out," Simon said.
Newcastle face Sydney FC on Saturday at Leichhardt Oval from 4:45 pm.
