At the Games in 2014, Australia won seven of the 17 gold medals on offer with England only managing to take out four.

However, four years a lot can change.

English cyclist Katy Marchant is the biggest rival for Australia in the women's sprint, where she won a bronze at the Olympic Games in Rio.

In Rio, Great Britain took out six gold medals winning the Men's Team Pursuit in world record time.

2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Annette Edmondson said the competition is always unknown.

"It will be interesting at Great Britain usually do it together as a team with England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland so it's going to be interesting to see what they can do," she said.

"We have got some strong squad from Wales and England.

"You never know what the competition is going to do," Edmondson said.

While the rivalry between Australia and England is there, it is not in the forefront of the Australian Women's 4000m Team Pursuit squad who are looking to break an Australian record these Games.

"We are hoping to do an Australian record," Edmondson said.

"We are going really fast at training so we just have to keep our heads on our shoulders and keep doing what we can do as a team."

Track cycling begins on Thursday, April 5 at the Anna Mears Velodrome in Chandler, Brisbane.
