Kelsey Cottrell, Carla Krizanic, Rebecca van Asch and Natasha Scott have led Australia's women's team to victory over defending Commonwealth Games gold medalist South Africa.

Known as the Jackaroos, they trailed the game early but fought there way back into the match with a final score of 18-16.

"It hasn't sunk in it," said Cottrell.

It is Australia's first gold medal since Melbourne in 2006, where they secured three golds, one silver and bronze from the six disciplines.

The team is quite young side with three of the aged 27 while silver medalist, South Africa have three players over the age of 45.

Van Asch said it was great for such a young side to win.

"It's been good for us; we love and have all been playing for quite a while, and all our family play as well," she said.

Scott, Cottrell and Van Asch won't have much time to celebrate the win as they competed in Triples competition this evening.
