The youngest team in the competition, Australia win through to the final
A late goal from Georgia Yeoman-Dale has helped the Young Matildas win through to the final of the AFF Women's Championships after a 2 - 1 win over hosts Myanmar at the Youth Training Centre, Yangon.
Goals from Natalie Tobin and Yeoman-Dale saw Australia recover to cancel out Khin Moe Wai's early goal.
With a finals place on the line, Australia had the worst possible start to the match when Khin Moe Wai blasted home from inside the box barely 45 seconds after the match commenced.
Despite the early setback, the Young Matildas quickly re-grouped and it wasn't long before they were fashioning their own chances through high intensity pressing. That pressure led to the equaliser in the 15th minute when a defensive mistake allowed midfielder Natalie Tobin to nip in and level the scores superbly from 20 yards out.
After the opening flurry the match then settled into an ebb and flow with one side attacking and the other countering but no further score was added to the board in the first half.
The second half continued much like the first with tight defending and pressure the hallmarks. Myanmar went close on a number of occasions but Yee Yee Oo and Naw Arlo Wer Phaw could not find the back of the net.
The breakthrough moment came with less than 15 minutes left on the clock when a Myanmar attack left space at the back. Taking full advantage, Brittany Whitfield wheeled out onto the left, drawing defenders, before measuring a pin point cross to Yeoman-Dale to turn home the winner.
“It took something special for the winning goal and I’m proud of the girls for what they showed this evening,” said a jubilant Spencer Prior.
“We managed to fight our way back from that early goal and that just showed the quality of the team we have here.”
Australia will now meet Japan U23 this Sunday in the final after the Japanese eventually overcame Vietnam 2-1 in additional extra time. Kick off is 10.15 pm (AEST).
