Young Matildas Head Coach Spencer Prior has named a 22-player squad for the upcoming AFC U-19 Women’s Championship which will be held in Nanjing, China PR from 11 to 20 October 2013.
Buoyed by their recent performances at the AFF (ASEAN Football Federation) Women’s Championship in Myanmar, where they lost to the Japanese U-23 Women’s team in a penalty shoot-out in the final, Prior believes that his team is ready for the upcoming tournament.
“We are no longer going into this tournament under the radar,” said Prior.
“The recent AFF Women’s Championships have given us a fantastic preparation and this group of players are ready to be competitive at this tournament.
“Obviously our goal for the tournament is to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup which would be a great achievement,” concluded Prior.
The Westfield Young Matildas will open their AFC U-19 Women’s Championship campaign against DPR Korea on Friday 11 October (Kick-off 4:30pm local, 7:30pm AEDT) followed by Japan (Sunday 13 October), China PR (Tuesday 15 October), Myanmar (Friday 18 October) and the Korea Republic (Sunday 20 October).
The top three (3) teams from the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship will advance to the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup which will be held in Canada from 5-24 August.
