The NSW Government today announced plans to bid for 10 World Cups in the next 10 years with women's sport being the focus.
Premier of NSW Gladys Berejiklian launched plans to attract some of the biggest sporting events in the world to the state over the next decade including the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup, Netball World Cup in 2027, 2029 Rugby League World Cup and 2022 UCI Road World Cycling Championships.
“We want to attract the world’s best and biggest events right here in NSW,” Ms Berejiklian said.
The Government will appoint an advisory committee, led by the man who brought the Olympics to Sydney, Rod McGeoch, to secure the world’s best sporting events.
“Sydney came alive during the 2000 Olympics. We know what excitement great sport brings to our city and I am thrilled to be part of this pursuit of 10 World Cups,” he said.
Rugby Australia welcomed the announcement as they get ready to submit their bid for the Women's World Cup in 2021 on August 10.
“Today’s announcement by the Berejiklian Government is terrific news for our game and sports fans across Australia," Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle said.
“We believe that Australian sports fans are the best in the world and deserve world class events in their backyard.
“The NSW Government’s commitment to make this a reality, is welcome news and a strong vote of confidence in our bids,” she said.
