Premiership winning Brisbane Roar coach Belinda Wilson has been appointed the new coach of the U17 Matildas.

Wilson takes over the position after the resignation of Vicki Linton in March to coach US W-League side Bay Area Breeze.

The appointment of Wilson is a crucial one with the U17s due to compete in the AFC U16 Championships in August which will double as a qualifier for the 2014 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup.

Wilson will have a familiar face with her on the touchline with her Brisbane Roar assistant Melissa Andreatta joining her as the Assistant coach for the U17 Matildas.

The U17s have in recent times struggled to progress to the feature tournament and will once again face a tough task in qualifying with 2012 FIFA U17 quarter finalist Japan and runners up DPR Korea involved.

The tournament kicks-off on September 19 – September 29 with the top three sides set to represent Asia at the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup schedule to take place in Costa Rica next April.

Australia has been drawn in Group A along with China and Bahrain.
