A 16-year-old with the opener and a 17-year-old with the winner. The kids were alright in Western Sydney Wanderers' season opening 2-1 win over Adelaide United at Marconi Stadium.
WANDERERS RATINGS
Abby Smith - 8.5
A very composed performance, coming out and spoiling Mary Fowler at every opportunity, bar the penalty. She made a series of excellent saves in the second half as well when Adelaide were heaping pressure.
Alix Roberts - 7.5
Fantastic effort pushing up that right flank, well deserved reward in the assist for Kristen Hamilton’s equaliser. She's definitely an asset going forward, although still slips focus occasionally at the other end.
Courtney Nevin - 7
She did well to outpace Fowler on occasion and reads the game very adequately, but was also off the pace on a few key plays.
Alexandra Huynh - 7
She has a lot of pressure for that starting centreback spot and seemed a tad shaky at times. She could have conceded a few free-kicks in key situations had the referee been paying a little more attention.
But she worked her way into the game and had a very effective second half.
Sam Staab - 7
Her passing is fantastic and she plays with poise and purpose. She's also very physical, coming from a tight NWSL campaign. However, she’s not necessarily the world-class defensive import the Wanderers require. That will still take some convincing.
