It was a game that the viewer's watching couldn't turn away from no matter how nerve-wracking it was.

As the second half whistle blew, it was the Matildas that drew first blood with a beautiful play from Alanna Kennedy, Sam Kerr and Foord to give their side the lead.

It was the kind of fast-paced counter-attack coach Ante Milicic has been looking to implement since he took charge of the side in February.

But it didn't take long for the US to find a reply, this came through Heath and re-ignited a fire within the home side.

What ensued was four more goals with the USA taking a 4-3 lead.

It wasn't the result they were hoping for but scoring three against the reigning World Champions was no small feat for the Matildas in their 5-3 loss against the USA. A thrilling game provided plenty of end to end action and so many moments to savour. Check our the pics.

The Matildas weren't without their chances as the game drew on and it did appear they could find the equaliser. But they started to run out of gas and that is something that teams can't do when facing the USA.

They are a team that plays 90-plus minutes of football and when the Matildas had a lapse in concentration in injury time, it resulted in the fifth goal for the USA.

It's just the fourth game in charge for Milicic so it's all progressing as expected, not everything is going to be perfect and there are teething problems in defence.

It was the first time the Matildas had five scored against them in seven years but they did manage to score three, considering the USA had only conceded eight in 16.

However, the team may have another friendly coming up with FoxSports presenter Tara Rushton saying FFA was finalising a match against a top-ranked European side which is set to be announced next week.
