The Matildas have gone down 5-3 to the United States in one of their last friendlies before the FIFA Women's World Cup.
The world no.1 team will take confidence heading into their remaining matches in the lead up to France 2019.
There was an early chance for the Matildas when forward Lisa De Vanna was denied a penalty after contact was made in the box. However, that would be the last time Australia would have an opportunity for the next 10 minutes as the USA dominated that period of play.
The Matildas tried to play out from the back, something which is reminiscent of the Roarcelona days in the A-League, but this simply wasn't working with a high pressing forward line from the US.
It made it extremely difficult for Australia to make it out of their own half.
However, this was able to be fixed by just moving the ball around quicker to create more space in transition.
Unfortunately, for the Matildas, the USA's dominance in that stanza would result in Alex Morgan scoring her 100th international goal. The veteran forwards goal also brought a record with it...when Morgan scores the USA never lose.
Not a record the Matildas want to come up against when they've had just one win of the three-time World Cup winners.
But an uncharacteristic defending choice from Emily Sonnett would invite Australia back into the match. Lisa De Vanna was given acre's of space on the ball after a run from Caitlin Foord and she made the USA pay.

There were some tense moments towards the end of the first half when Tobin Heath and Megan Rapinoe combined to catch the Matildas off guard in the box.
But it was teenager Ellie Carpenter who was switched on to make a save on the line.

It was a game that the viewer's watching couldn't turn away from no matter how nerve-wracking it was.
As the second half whistle blew, it was the Matildas that drew first blood with a beautiful play from Alanna Kennedy, Sam Kerr and Foord to give their side the lead.
It was the kind of fast-paced counter-attack coach Ante Milicic has been looking to implement since he took charge of the side in February.

But it didn't take long for the US to find a reply, this came through Heath and re-ignited a fire within the home side.
What ensued was four more goals with the USA taking a 4-3 lead.
The Matildas weren't without their chances as the game drew on and it did appear they could find the equaliser. But they started to run out of gas and that is something that teams can't do when facing the USA.
They are a team that plays 90-plus minutes of football and when the Matildas had a lapse in concentration in injury time, it resulted in the fifth goal for the USA.
Pugh’s second goal and the 8th goal of the night. This crazy unusual goal seems fitting to this high scoring game #USAvAUS pic.twitter.com/JLALWmpiSk

It's just the fourth game in charge for Milicic so it's all progressing as expected, not everything is going to be perfect and there are teething problems in defence.
It was the first time the Matildas had five scored against them in seven years but they did manage to score three, considering the USA had only conceded eight in 16.
However, the team may have another friendly coming up with FoxSports presenter Tara Rushton saying FFA was finalising a match against a top-ranked European side which is set to be announced next week.
