Australia have been defeated 2-1 by the United States in their second match of the international friendlies at the Australian Institute of Sport.
Rachel Lowe's first half goal was not enough for the hosts as the United States found two late second half goals from Rachel Jones for a hard fought victory.
The Young Matildas started the match positively with Australia peppering the United States goals and early but it was the visitors with the first real look at the goals as a free kick sailed just inches of Jada Whyman's goal in the 10th minute.
Two minutes late Madelyn Desciano found space passed the Aussie midfield to pick out Aleigh Gambone with Gambone's shot hitting the far right netting.
In the back and forth it was Australia's turn in the 14th minute as Alex Chidiac looked to add to her series goal tally with a low shot rolling inches wide of Claudia Dickey's left post.
The 27th minute saw the Americans back on the attack with Whyman forced into a sharp save from a well constructed corner. 10 minutes later the Americans were on the Australian doorsteps again with Taryn Torres unleashing a strike just off target.
Three minutes after surviving the USA scares, Australia had the lead when Remy Siemsen flicked a ball into the path of Lowe with the Wanderers striker placing her shot diagonally into the bottom left corner.
Australia looked to double their advantage before the break with Ellie Carpenter's cross finding the head of Nicki Flannery but the Canberra United winger's effort was headed high.
The second half saw the Americans back on the attack and Whyman was again called into action as the Wanderers' keeper smothered a low effort in the 56th minute.
Summer Yates almost took advantage of loose Australian passing in the 62nd minute as she found a path through the defence before her effort was cleared after a flurry of attempts.
A minute later Gambone and Jones peppered the Young Matildas' goal, with Gambone's effort slicing across the goal mouth and skimming far post.
The pressure finally told in the 73rd minute with Spaanstra's sharp and low strike bringing the scores level. Not happy with the equaliser the visitors pushed on and in the 87th minute the lively Jones split the Aussie centre backs. Whyman made an attempt to clear but the open goal beckoned.
The two nations will meet again on Wednesday, 12 June 2017 at AIS Field 2. Kick off is 3.30pm
