The term “baseball mom”, “soccer mom” or any other “sport mom” was coined in the US referring to a mother who supports their child in the sport they love.
In researching google references to “baseball dad” it usually included words around coaching, playing and yelling at umpires, while the “mom” is all about washing uniforms, finding gloves and sitting on the sidelines.
There is even a website dedicated to the 13 types of Baseball Mom, well, they missed the 14th, which in my view is number one.
This year at the inaugural Bendigo Challenge, where Australia’s best female baseballers will compete against each other and a Japanese All Star team, there will be five women playing who also happen to be mothers.
These are true baseball mums, athletes who also have children.
They demonstrate the resilience, drive and determination that it takes to not only play sport at the elite level but have also built themselves a support network in their partners, family and friends.
Their partners, friends and family will be supporting them all the way, whether it is from afar having skype calls at night with their kids, or on the opposition team coaching staff.
The Women's Game with Baseball Australia is proud to launch a new mini-series over the next week and a half about these five mums.
