The Newcastle Jets went down to Sydney FC in a tight contest that finished 1-0 at Magic Park on Saturday afternoon. A Jasmyne Spencer tap in on 28 minutes proved the difference on the day.
The match started as a slightly cagey affair with the match with the first half being one of few chances for both sides.
Nicola Bolger did her best to unlock the Newcastle defence with some wonderful vision and passing game, putting Jasmyne Spencer one on one with Coelho, however Coelho just got their first to smother the opportunity.
A few moments later Bolger was at it again. She slid a well weighted pass across the face of the box for Amy Harrison, who with her back to goal, flicked it up took a couple of juggling touches and calmly flick it back to Bolger who’s first time volley was hit over the bar.
The turning point:
A Renee Rollason through ball in the 28th minute was met by Jets goal keeper Clare Coelho, who perhaps misjudged the pace of the oncoming Jasmyne Spencer who had chased through.
This resulted in Coelho rushing a clearance which was charged down by Spencer and deflected nicely for her to run on and walk in into the back of the net.
From the restart the Jets had a number of opportunities to hit straight back with Huster going close in the 30th minute. Van Egmond also had a long range chance saved by Dumont.
Perhaps the best chance for the Jets in the first half fell to the in-form Rhali Dobson who made a good run from near halfway, taking the ball to the edge of the box and unleashing a shot that looked destined for the top corner, only for Dumont to use her height to pluck it out of the air.
The Jets started the better and had the majority of possession and chances in the 2nd half, with Sydney possibly feeling the effects of the short turnaround from Monday’s tough match against Melbourne Victory.
The best of the chances came with 20 minutes left: Georgia Yeomen-Dale delivered a pin point cross for Dobson who laid it off to Andrews with her shot well parried away for a corner by Dumont.
The difference:
Casey Dumont. Without her brilliant reflexes and anticipation, Sydney FC would not have come home with the three points in the bag; in fact they may not have come home with any points at all.
In Round 6 Newcastle Jets travel to Marconi Stadium to face a youthful Wanderers side high on confidence after a shock 2-1 win over the struggling powerhouse Brisbane Roar whilst Sydney FC are also on the road to Perth Glory in what promises to be their toughest encounter yet.
