The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has ranked Sydney FC in the top 10 of the world's best women's football club teams.

German side VfL Wolfsburg were ranked as the number one club side thanks to their Bundesliga, German Cup and UEFA Women's Champions League titles.

Wolfsburg were ranked just ahead of fellow Champions League finalists and 2012 winners Olympique Lyon with USA's Portland Thorns coming in third.

The list was complied by the editorial staff and experts from  over 70 countries and takes into account the results of the previous 12 months in national and international competitions.

Although only this is only the second year an award has been given for the best women's club team, the IFFHS, a statistical organisation recognised and receiving support from FIFA, has been recognising  The World's Club Team of the Year in men's football since 1991.

Sydney FC are Australia's only entrant with their 2012/13 championship and performances  (and third placing) in the International Women's Club Challenge going a long way to their recognition alongside Wolfsburg, Lyon, Turbine Potsdam and Swedish powerhouse Tyreso.

Despite their first loss of the season, Sydney FC are currently joint leaders of the W-League with Melbourne Victory.
