Sweltering and windy conditions welcomed defending champions Sydney FC to Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
The Sky Blues were mostly untroubled winning 3-0 thanks to a double to last week’s hat trick hero Catlin Foord and another from one time Jet, Nicola Bolger which sealed the win for Sydney.
Despite the 3-0 loss the Jets played well for more consistent periods of the match as opposed to patches of good play.
They had they most of the possession for the first ten minutes and went hard at Sydney early on winning several corners.
They had a number of chances to take the lead but were unable to do so, with perhaps the best chance of the first half falling to Hannah Beard from a corner that sat up nicely inside the 18 yard box but put her powerful shot over the bar.
Sydney managed to absorb the pressure and took the lead against the run of play with a well taken goal from Nicola Bolger.
Bolger, Foord, Kerr and the exciting Chloe Logarzo who was awarded a rare start were standouts for Sydney and Jodie Taylor was unlucky to be called off side on occasions that may have gone her way on another day.
Sydney are a top class side and were able to get the job done despite not being at their best. Catlin Foord continued her good form from last weekend scoring a double.
The Jets produced their best match performance of the season making the defending champions work for the win.
Despite going down 3-0 the Jets can be considered unlucky not to have at least troubled the scorers in this match. Several chances fell their way with Hannah Beard, Tara Andrews and Grace Macintyre in her come back match kept the Sydney defence on edge but an inability to find the target combined with some good saves from Sham Khamis hindered them.
Grace Macintyre added some spark to the Newcastle attack in her first match back from injury and came close to getting on the scoresheet in the 2nd half squeezing a shot just past the right post.
Tara Andrews also found space in behind the Sydney defence in the 2nd half shooting just wide of the target with two chances within minutes.
She also produced the save of the match out of Khamis, who was forced into spectacular dive one handed to her left to stop a rocket that would have ended up in the top corner.
The Jets defence also stood up despite the absence of the reliable Stacy Day and was therefore lead by Goal Keeper Elisa Campbell.
Campbell produced some quality saves to try to keep the Jets in the contest once again including a low fingertip save from a curling Rollason free kick.
The Jets continue to improve with every game, putting in their most complete performance to date creating several opportunities in front of goal against the best team in the league.
Newcastle travel to Perth next week boosted by this performance and the self-belief that a first win may be just around the corner.
While Sydney FC will be looking to improve on what they would consider to be a below par performance as they juggle two games within a week taking on cross town rivals Wanderers on Wednesday night before backing up on Sunday at home to Brisbane Roar.
