This weekend will provide the Adelaide United W-League Squad with their last opportunity to impress for final selection into the Adelaide United W-League Team for 2010-11 when they compete in the Inaugural Interstate Challenge.

This event will see the Adelaide United W-League Squad take on the Illawarra Stingrays, NSW Premier League Champions for 2010 and the Football Federation SA Senior State Team.

This tournament was formulated following an approach by Illawarra Stingrays to the Football Federation SA to organise games against South Australia State and/or Adelaide United W-League team after their bid to join the Westfield W-League for 2010-2011 was rejected by Football Federation Australia.

Football Federation SA has appointed ex-Matilda and W-League Assistant coach, Kristyn Swaffer, as coach of the State Team. Kristyn believes that the October Long Weekend tournament will be a great opportunity to showcase South Australia’s best players.

It will also provide a chance for the players in the Senior State Team to push for selection in the Adelaide United Team for the upcoming Westfield Women’s W-League.

Adelaide United W-League coach Michael Barnett stated “Illawarra’s involvement in this tournament came about as they have aspirations to be a part of the Westfield W-League.

We are building on our relationship with Football Federation SA in creating this tournament to showcase our local female football talent and to prepare the AUFC WWL squad for the upcoming season”

The Interstate Challenge will follow on the back of the Football Federation SA State Talent Identification Tournament (STIC). This tournament will show case over 500 of South Australia’s most talented young footballers as they compete in games over the entire long weekend, with each day culminating with an Interstate Challenge game.

All games will be held at the Para Hills Soccer Club, The Paddocks, Bridge Road, Para Hills.
