AFLW player Cora Staunton has suffered a serious injury while playing in the AFL Sydney Premier Division Women’s competition.
The GWS Giants confirmed the Irish import broke her leg during a tackle midway through the third quarter playing for UNSW-ES Bulldogs on Saturday.
The game against Macquarie University was stopped for over 20 minutes with Staunton unable to be moved from the field while she waited for an ambulance before the match was eventually called off.
Initial scans confirmed Staunton has broken both the tibia and fibula bones in her right leg but is set to have more test to establish the full extent of her injury.
The Gaelic Football legend recently re-signed with the Giants for the 2020 AFLW season.
The Giants said the clubs medical staff is working closely with Staunton with surgery expected in the coming days
