A week is a long time in football so two weeks is almost an eternity!
A week is a long time in football so two weeks is almost an eternity!
Rounds 4 and 5 saw plenty of action with individual records and team history being made for good and bad reasons.
Ladder wise Perth Glory moved to claim pole position at the top thanks to a big win over the Western Sydney Wanderers and a crucial one over an inconsistent but dangerous Canberra United (fourth).
Sydney FC maintained a grip on second position while Melbourne Victory shifted into third as they continued their unbeaten streak.
At the lower half of the table the Newcastle Jets continue to knock on the door of the Top Four while Brisbane Roar are in real danger of missing out on the final series for the first time in their history.
The Western Sydney Wanderers put in Jekyll and Hyde performances while a competitive Adelaide United are still searching for their first points.
Team of the Week – Notes
We have had some understandable concerns raised about the equitableness of the TOTW.
We started it as a way of acknowledging strong performances beyond the sole Player of the Week.
In its format (11 players and honourable mentions), and with up to 112 players taking to the pitch in a W-League round, it naturally can't acknowledge ALL the stellar performances in the week for players in all teams.
That does not negate those efforts but we thought it might be nice for transparency to show how we go about selecting a team.
* Our correspondents at each match nominate 2 GKs, 2 DEF, 2 MID, 2 FWD
* Fans provide nominations from their viewing of the matches
* The two votes are combined to come up with a team
In coming up with the final team we also look at the limited statistics on hand.
Honourable Mentions: Brianna Davey/Casey Dumont, Emily Condon, Sam Kerr
Honourable Mentions:: Hayley Crawford, Rachel Soutar, Amy Chapman, Christine Nairn, Katrina Gorry
Note: The players are in no particular formation just the nominated defenders, midfielders and strikers
Short Corners
- Two goals this weekend saw Perth Glory striker Kate Gill net her 10th goal of the season.
That tally is as many goals as Season 6's Golden Boot winner Jodie Taylor managed in a full season. Gill will now be gunning for Michelle Heyman's single season record of 15 goals back in Season 4.
- Gill's tally was helped enormously by the 5 she scored last week against the Western Sydney Wanderers. In doing so, the striker joined Tara Andrews as she equalled the record for most goals in a match by a player.
- The Glory's, and Gill's, victims, the Western Sydney Wanderers, put to good use the harsh lessons learned it that 10 – 1 loss to bounce back in sensation style. Away from home, and against a star studded side Brisbane Roar side looking for much needed points, the Wanderers 2-1 win was immense.
From the second biggest loss in W-League history, the Wanderers have produced the turnaround in the league's history.
- With her first goal of the season, Glory's Shelina Zadorksy became the latest defender to fight high altitude to score. Defenders have notched up 9 goals this season with Renee Rollason (2), Alanna Kennedy (2), Ellie Brush, Grace Field, Stephanie Catley and Lauren Barnes all getting in on the action.
- Melbourne Victory midfielder Amy Jackson topped off a solid performance with a hat trick to help defending champions remain in 3rd place. Jackson's hat trick was the 21 in W-League history with 6 scored in Season 4. Brisbane Roar's Tameka Butt has the most hat tricks with 3 (Seasons 2, 4 & 5).
