Round 2 saw Canberra United remain on top of the table as they ended the Adelaide United resistance while the defending champions Melbourne Victory got off the mark for Season 7

Perth Glory travelled home with a hard earned three points against the Newcastle Jets and Renee Rollason and Casey Dumont were instrumental in helping Sydney FC overcome Brisbane Roar.

Team of the Week - Notes

  • Casey Dumont: strong all day under pressure from the Roar, especially after sustaining bruised ribs in the 37th min
  • Renee Rollason: two goals including a superb trademark free kick helped a 10 player Sydney keep a perfect record
  • Alanna Kennedy: scored first goal for Perth Glory and denied the Jets time and again in defence
  • Laura Alleway: stout in defence for the Roar
  • Steph Catley: strong as always in defence, provided her usual attacking runs going forward
  • Keelin Winters: made the Wanderers tick and managed 2 goals of her own
  • Christine Nairn: 5 assists and pulled the strings for Victory
  • Emily van Egmond: attacking threat for Newcastle, created numerous chances for the fowards
  • Racheal Quigley: 2 goals to help Victory in their win
  • Jasmyne Spencer: caused problems all afternoon for the Roar defence, especially good as a lone striker when Sydney went down to 10
  • Stephanie Ochs: scored the match winner but also created chance after chance

Short Corners

  • Perth Glory's Marianna Tabain curling free kick marked the 901st goal scored in the W-League's 7 seasons. What was the highest scoring season? 2012/13 was a crazy one with 200 goals scored in 51 matches with an average of 3.9 goals per game. Perth Glory (34) and Sydney FC (30) led the scoring in Season 5.Who scored the 900th? Western Sydney Wanderers' Demi Koulizakis.

  • Striker Racheal Quigley scored her first two goals for the Melbourne Victory bringing her career total to 14.

Before her move to the Victory, Quigley was the final foundation player of Adelaide United and leads the Lady Reds in all time appearances (58) and goals (12).

  • On the other end of the Lady Reds spectrum is Alex Chidiac, with the midfielder making her debut on the weekend. At 15 years and 8 months, Chidiac became the second youngest Red (Emily Condon beats her out by 4 months) and is the second youngest player on a W-League roster. Canberra United's Grace Maher is the youngest at 15 years and 5 months.

  • With her 51st minute effort on the weekend, Victory striker Lisa De Vanna scored her 28th career goal moving her into the Top 5 All-time W-League goal scorers list. De Vanna is one of the many players to have won two W-League championships but is the only player to have won championships at two different clubs; Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory.

  • Also on the board in that match was Western Sydney Wanderers' Michelle Carney.  A former Matilda, Carney is also one of a handful of players to have an W-League / A-League connection with younger brother David having played for Sydney FC and the Jets. Others with this connection include:

    • the Spiranovics: Laura played with the Victory and brother Matthew with the Wanderers
    • the Browns: both Ashley and Jordan are with the Victory
    • the Van Egmonds: Emily is co-captains the Newcastle Jets while father Gary was the former manager of the Jets A-League side
    • the Alagichs: now both retired but former Matildas defender Dianne and her older brother Richie led the way early with both lining up for Adelaide United (thanks to Christian Layland for the tip)

  • Finally, we would be remiss in not mentioning the amazing home debut of Victory's US import Christine Nairn. Anchoring the midfield, it seemed Nairn was everywhere and the end result was five assists in Melbourne's 5 – 3 win.
