20 year old Sam Kerr has been awarded the 2013/13 PFA Footballer of the Year at the Australian Football Awards.

Voted on by her fellow players, the electric winger was rewarded for a stellar Championship winning season with Sydney FC and an equally impressive season with the Western New York Flash.

Despite her achievements in the past 12 months, Kerr was surprised to receive the recognition.

"It was a little bit a surprise," she said.

"I came here just to have a good night and a free meal but I wouldn't say I am complaining."

Kerr was instrumental in Sydney FC's second championship triumph as equal top goalscorer for the Sky Blues before heading over to the American National Women's Soccer League.

Playing 19 of the 22 games, finishing third in Flash scoring and second in assists, Kerr helped the Flash to the regular season title and runners up in the Championship.

"I think it is one of the best awards to win when you are voted on by your peers."

"It is a nice thing to be voted on by the people that you play with."

"After a year like that it's nice but it makes me want to work harder and win more things with my team."

Kerr is back in action this Saturday with the top of the table Sydney FC as they host the Newcastle Jets.
