Last week saw Melbourne Victory dealt their third consecutive loss of the season with a 1-0 score line against Newcastle Jets. Adelaide, by contrast, are triumphantly walking away from their first win of the season after last week’s 2-1 victory against Brisbane Roar.
Victory’s run in with the Jets was fraught with tension – both teams collectively receiving six yellows – as the two sides fought for their first win of the season. Victory also unfortunately broke their scoring streak.
The game was lost on a goal from Jets’ Chloe Logarzo. However, throughout the game it was visible to see that Melbourne’s possessive play in the centre of the field has visibly sharpened. Melissa Barbieri executed an excellent save on a penalty kick which saw a peak in Victory’s esteem.
Round 3 saw Adelaide deservingly earn three on the table. The pairing of Emily Condon and Rosie Sutton were essential for The Lady Reds’ win, however a solid defence and persistent pressure helped contain and restrain Brisbane.
Washington Spirit loan Christine Nairn is steadily establishing herself as both a key player and leadership figure for Victory. It will be intriguing to see the further developments with her partnership with central striker Laura Spiranovic, and perhaps even see her firm left boot land one in the back of the net.
Adelaide will be looking to cement themselves as a team to be wary of by bringing the consistency they have lacked in recent seasons.
All eyes will be on newly appointed captain Marijana Rajcic as she eases back into the game after injury. Hopefully Rajcic will be in the starting eleven and have a noticeable impact on the forward line.
At the other end of the pitch, New Zealand loan Kaitlyn Savage has also been catching the admiration of many from goals.
Last encounters between the two teams saw Adelaide defeat Victory 2-1 at the end of Season 7, whilst prior to that Victory claimed a solid 4-0 win.
Given the sporadic nature of past scoreboards and overhauls undergone by both sides, predictions hang in the air with this one. Nonetheless, both teams will be coming into the match with something to prove.
The game will be held at Epping Stadium, Sunday 8th November, 3.00pm kick off. Entry is $5, free for kids and Melbourne Victory members.
