Two goals from striker Emily Gielnik and another from Gabe Marzano saw the Brisbane Roar take all three points last weekend with a 3-0 win over the Western Sydney Wanderers. Meanwhile Adelaide United had a bye after a first round draw to the Wanderers.
The Roar head into the round as one of only two teams with perfect records. Seattle Reign goalkeeper, Haley Kopmeyer has started to settle into the pace of the W-League. She made save after save, stopping spectacular shots from Wanderers attackers.
The defence wasn’t marred by Clare Polkinghorne’s absence. Ruth Blackburn stood firm and took lead of the defence. She constantly blocked Wanderers attackers with superb tackling.
Meanwhile, Adelaide United had to settle for a week off. Their first game of a season saw a 2-2 draw with Western Sydney Wanderers. It might not have been the way coach Jamie Harnwell wanted to start, but they showed great persistence to come back from 2-0 down.
Attackers Rosie Sutton and Elizabeth Milne penetrated the Wanderers defence only a few times. Their second half saw them come out controlling possession and having more opportunities of the two teams.
After a splendid game against Wanderers, Emily Gielnik will be the one the Adelaide defence have to watch out for. Her powerful runs will allow her to get in behind the defensive line and create goal-scoring opportunities.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the park, Sarah Killion and Marijana Rajcic will be hoping to get the ball through a solid Roar defence. Killion’s two set-piece goals in the Wanderers game proved invaluable.
The Roar haven’t been troubled so far from set pieces, but will be tested each time Killion sets-up the ball. Rajcic returns to injury in her first game as captain. She’s a clinical finisher, scoring38 goals in 14 matches in the local league.
It has been a one-sided affair when it comes to this match, with Brisbane winning seven of the ten matches. The last time they met Brisbane won 3-0 at Suncorp Stadium with Tameka Butt and Emily Gielnik scoring the goals.
Adelaide are coming back fresh from a week’s break but with Roar coming off two wins, it will be interesting to see the ladies in red can stop the Roar’s attacking force.
