Round 2 kicks off with the Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory going head to head at Magic Park on Saturday, as both sides look to extend their good start to the season.
Both the Jets and Glory recorded first up home wins in pretty convincing fashion.
The Jets defeated the more fancied defending champions Melbourne Victory 1-0 courtesy of a 47th minute strike from Angela Salem, just reward for dominant performance by their midfielders. Meanwhile the Glory also took advantage of unsettled opponents claiming a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar.
The winner of this week’s match will be the side who controls the midfield.
For the Jets the key to winning will be to shut down the supply to former Jet Kate Gill and the dynamic Sam Kerr. Gill and Kerr proved difficult for the Roar to contain as they revived a long term partnership up front in Kerr’s first game in purple since 2011/12 season.
The pinpoint passing of Collette McCallum along with the ability of Caitlin Foord to bomb forward from the right back position in attack is a duel threat.
The Glory have a somewhat mirrored task of shutting down the Jets midfield, who dominated the Victory from the opening whistle last weekend.
American imports Angela Salem and Tori Huster along with Matilda Emily van Egmond and Amber Neilson forged a strong combination and will once again look to combine with the electric Georgia Yeomen-Dale and Katherine Reynolds in search of glory.
While both defences appear to be equally strong, it will be Newcastle with the much harder task of trying to defend against a Matildas laden front third. Conversely the Jets forward line will be hoping a second week together will have them firing enough to trouble the visitors.
Last season the two sides met in two vastly different matches which ended with the same result; a Glory victory.
The last meeting on the Jets home turf was Round 1 last season with the Glory winning in very convincing fashion a 5-2 win. The return match in Perth saw the Jets hit the front, leading 2-0 before succumbing to fatigue and losing 3-2.
This match should be a enthralling as the Jets eye back to back wins for the first time since season 2011/12.
