Round 10 begins this week with a Friday night fixture which sees Adelaide United take on Sydney FC at Adelaide Shores Football Centre.
Both teams are coming off a disappointing 3 - 0 losses dished out by rejuvenated sides Brisbane Roar and Canberra United.
Adelaide, missing five of their younger stars to Young Matildas duties, were unable to come back from being down 2 – 0 at half time, with Tamika Butt nailing her second of the day in the 74th minute to complete the score line. Adelaide and Kristy Moore did have a few chances during the second half but could not connect to put them in the back of the net.
Sydney FC were also unable to find the back of the net in their loss over the weekend with a fine tuned Canberra side heading back into the winners circle.
Ellie Brush and Grace Field were instrumental in keeping the ever present Jasmyne Spencer scoreless for the whole 90 minutes while Michelle Heyman, Stephanie Ochs and Sally Rojahn scoring for the home team in front of 864 strong Canberra fans.
Sydney did find their feet for a bit in the second half by moving Teigen Allen forward to assist Spencer but wasn’t enough for the Sky Blues to make an impact on the game.
Both sides will need the win on Friday night to keep their final chances alive with only two regular season matches remaining after this weekend.
Adelaide will have a boost as back into their side return Isabel Hodgson, Monique Iannella and Emily Condon after fantastic tournament in Vietnam with the Young Matildas. Both played significant minutes in all three qualifying matches and should be full of confidence and raring to go for Adelaide.
This match up also sees the ever increasing rock of Adelaide's defence Danielle Brogan come up against the side she captained for many season.
For Sydney FC there are still plenty of questions to be answered as they falter in the run home.
Will this be the week that sees Kyah Simon back in the side for the Sky Blues? If it is, Adelaide’s back line will have trouble keeping both Simon and Spencer at bay.
Sydney will once against be relying on a strong back line, with the likes of Allen and Clifford and Johnson, but will they also have their hands full in matching the pace of the young Red.
The midfield battle will once again be crucial in telling the tale with Adelaide's best, Lisa Marie Woods, set to match up against Sydney's best, Teresa Polias. The winner of that intriguing contest will go a long way to determining the outcome of this match.
With Sydney taking the first round honours with a 2-0 win over Adelaide United it Round 1, it will be a good test to see how far the Lady Reds have come over the season.
Head to head these two sides have met 10 times with Sydney winning 9 of those matches with Adelaide’s only win against Sydney going back to the very first season at Hindmarsh Stadium.
Can Adelaide kill anther giant or can Sydney get back to winning after dropping three of their last four matches?
