Brisbane Roar suffered their second loss in a row after a 2-0 defeat by Perth Glory on Sunday afternoon.
It was a physical affair with both teams getting frustrated over being met with a crowd of players each time a player went near the goal. But an ankle injury to Perth Glory captain Samantha Kerr potentially soured the victory.
Brisbane Roar – Key Points and Players
After their week off, Brisbane were looking to come back with a win but were met with a strong defensive Perth line-up.
When the chances presented themselves in front of goal, the ball couldn’t find the back of the net, even in the sheer desperation in the 18-yard box from the players the ball wouldn’t go in the goal.
Meanwhile, striker Emily Gielnik wasn’t receiving the service from out-wide, as she has in the past matches. Gabe Marzano was missing from the side, and Alisha Foote was placed in the backline for Summer O’Brien.
This change to the line up didn’t faze Katrina Gorry and fellow midfielder Tameka Butt as they showed their experience with excellent control of the ball up the pitch, being able to create the chances for the forwards.
Despite the loss, Brisbane were able to pull positive out, they physically matched the Perth Glory side as well as glimpses of a strong defence and great plays from the younger players in the squad..
The two goals they conceded do not reflect on the effort fans saw by the Brisbane defence.
Perth Glory – Key Points and Players
Not much could’ve gone wrong for Perth in the game on Sunday afternoon. They were unbelievable at every part of the pitch.
American Vanessa Di Bernardo was outstanding in her debut for the club, and should be the one other club are on the look out for when they are playing against Perth.
The Perth Glory defence line was solid and rarely let Brisbane attackers Cortee Vine and Emily Gielnik have a shot on goal.
However, this changed in the second half as Brisbane were able to get back on top of the team and string together great shots on goal.
Meanwhile, Foord and Kerr worked off each other until an unfortunate injury to Kerr saw her have to leave the pitch late in the first half. Foord had a frustrating day in front of goal and was unlucky not to score.
This was the different between the two teams today, the ability to get the ball to the forwards and have the confidence to have a shot.
Up Next?
Despite the loss, Brisbane have vowed to come back against the undefeated Melbourne City. Meanwhile, Perth Glory have a week off before facing a winless Melbourne Victory at home.
