South Australian native and Giants assistant coach Tania Obst has been announced at the head coach of the Adelaide Thunderbirds for the next three seasons.
Obst will be returning home to Adelaide to help with the evolution of the Adelaide Thunderbirds as part of the overall new strategic direction for Netball SA.
“I am so excited about coming home to coach the Adelaide Thunderbirds," she said.
"I am a proud South Australian, have strong roots in the netball community and I Iook forward to having a positive impact on the team and the sport more broadly in South Australia moving forward," Obst said.
Obst, who was the Assistant Coach of England at the recent Commonwealth Games, has intimate knowledge of South Australian pathway from her time as SASI Coach as well as a wealth of express from being an assistant coach which has seen the Giants become runners up in last years Super Netball.
The Giants currently sit second on the ladder, three points behind West Coast Fever.
“It has been an absolute pleasure to have Tania as part of the GIANTS Netball family for two seasons,” said Giants Head Coach Julie Fitzgerald.
“Her knowledge of the game, coaching expertise and strategic wisdom have been an asset to the team,” she said.
This is the fifth coaching change for the Thunderbirds in a matter of years after the announcement a fortnight ago that Dan Ryan would no be offered a new contract.
The Thunderbirds have been without a win in 23 games, they came close on the weekend against Collingwood but were unable to keep up their momentum.
The decision is part of a change in governance for the Thunderbirds with the core of the plan looking for the long-term sustainable success of the club.
There will be a focus on local talent, complemented by international and/or interstate athletes.
“I am well aware of the hard work we have ahead of ourselves, but my knowledge, commitment and energy will make sure we do what we need to do to make this club great again," Obst said.
Obst will continue her role with the Giants until the end of the season before commencing her role as Head Coach of the Thunderbirds after the completion of the Super Netball season.
