Move over Helen Housby, there is a new hero in the NSW Swifts with debutant Sophie Garbin inspiring her sides comeback to beat longtime rivals the Queensland Firebirds.
The 21-year-old scored the match-winner as the Swifts drew first blood for the 2018 season with a 54-53 win.
"That was pretty amazing, it felt like a scene from Grace on Court, the book by Maddy Proud," Garbin said.
"I was just focused on our team as the game got longer, we got stronger," she said.
It was a perfect start to the match for the Swifts as the Firebirds had opened a six-point lead heading into halftime but the Swifts started to fight back.
The Swifts were trailing by eight late in the third quarter but were able to respond with 11 goals due to the efforts of Garbin who had a 95 percent shooting accuracy.
“This victory was six months in the making,” Swifts captain Abbey McCulloch said.
“It’s wasn’t the best start to the season when you see how we performed in the first two quarters but I am so proud with the way the team stuck together and came good.
“It’s just the first game but I am really happy with how we saw that out in the end.”
