Set to make her 50th W-League appearance this weekend, Canberra United have named defender Nicole Sykes as their new captain for the 2013-14 W-League season
Sykes, who was in the inaugural W-League team, has replaced long time captains and club favourites Ellie Brush and Lydia Williams. Brush will remain part of the leadership group as Sykes' vice captain.
“I am delighted to have been afforded the honour of leading Canberra United for Season Six of the Westfield W-League.” Sykes commented.
“It’s a huge privilege especially as it was voted for by the players. It means a huge amount to me as I care so passionately about Canberra United."
Starting out as midfielder, the 21 year old was moved into the backline by former coach Jitka Klimkova where she flourished.
Starting every game in the last two seasons, Sykes held down the left back position and her consistency saw her named the Canberra United Player of the Year last season. It also earned her a contract with Swedish Damallsvenskan side Kristianstads FF where she played during the W-League off-season.
"To be able to step up and take more of a leadership role is something that I am very proud to do."
"I hope to be able to lead by example, bringing the team together on match day and ensure that the messages we have learned during the week are implemented during the match.”
Sykes will captain Canberra United for the first time this Saturday as Canberra United travel to face Brisbane Roar at AJ Kelly Fields. Kick off is 3pm AEDST.
