Last weekend's match up between Melbourne Victory and the Newcastle Jets saw the Jets get their first win of the season, while the Victory remain unable to garner a point so far this season.
An away 1-0 win to the Jets allowed them to build upon the nil-nil draw against Perth the previous weekend. Whilst not an incredibly convincing win from the Jets, they had the speed up top to prove dangerous to the Victory back line but they failed to convert the chances they created.
Standouts of the game for the Jets was by and large, Chloe Logarzo. In her first season with Newcastle the twenty year old, previously from Sydney FC, stepped up on the field over the weekend.
Logarzo’s presence in the midfield elevated the Jets level of play, slipping balls past the Victory defence, as well as showing a level of chemistry with her teammates through consistent dynamic passing under pressure.
As a whole, the Jets can come away from Melbourne knowing they've got the speed and chemistry to work past defenders efficiently. What they struggled with is the ability to put the ball in the back of the net, which came as a result of getting caught at the top of the box and failing to convert a penalty early in the second half.
The Victory come away from this game once again disappointed and frustrated, however there were once again improvements to be taken from the match.
Coach Dave Edmondson was particularly pleased with the team's possession with the ball, and while he admits it was by no means perfect, they had smarter possession on the ball and held it longer.
Captain and keeper Melissa Barbieri came up huge, keeping the Victory in the game with a diving save on a penalty. It was after this save that the Victory showed the most energy of the match, yet they were not managing to capitalize on it.
There were frustrations abound for Laura Spiranovic, who was a major force for the Victory in the Derby, but found herself double marked throughout the game. For all the increased possession, and positives to take away, the Victory were unable to put the ball in the back of the net for the first time all season.
Round four sees the Newcastle Jets at home against the Western Sydney Wanderers at 2:00pm, and the Victory play Adelaide United at Epping Stadium on Sunday at 3:00pm.
