The Newcastle Jets defeated Adelaide United 4-0 in Round 4 of the W-League.

A Tori Huster opener was followed by an Emily van Egmond goal on the shadows of half time before a second half Rhali Dobson brace secured the three points for the visitors.

Seeing the score line of 4 – 0 there is a presumption that had a really great game and completely dominated the match, but that does not tell the complete story of this match.

Adelaide United played a cat and mouse game with Newcastle Jets for most of the opening 25 minutes with plenty of possession in their defence line and in the middle of the park.

However once they managed to get to the final third, that's where they had issues with the Newcastle backline able to reclaim possession and send it back usually through the brilliance of W-League Player of the Week Dobson on the wing, or through the centre of the ever present Van Egmond.

Rising star Dylan Holmes played a solid game in the middle of the park with Katrine Pedersen and Lisa Marie Woods backing her up and looked to match it with the best that Newcastle had to offer.

Holmes, who took out the Football Federation SA Rising Star award last week, is one of the players starting to make a name and even with the likes of the experienced Angela Salem and Huster to contend with, the teenager looked to be comfortable in the attacking midfield position.

The turning point in the match was Newcastle's first goal.

A pin point pass found Huster and, with Adelaide's defence assuming she was offside, the American was given a free shot at Melissa Babieri.

Adelaide seemed to regroup and press on but were dealt a blown with the second goal of the half with Dobson putting in a beautiful cross into the path of Van Egmond, which she duly placed into the back of the net.

After the half time break the Lady Reds were once again slow to react when an errant back pass didn’t reach the intended target and Dobson used her speed to get to the ball first and then slotted in behind Barbieri to score her first goal of the match.

A confident Newcastle were demonstrating the overhaul that has made Peter McGuinness' side almost unrecognisable and has pushed Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar and overcome the Victory.

Despite the third goal, the Lady reds continued to push and on numerous occasions fashioned great chances for both Tiarn Powell and Emily Condon but neither could hit it on target or overcome a rapidly improving Claire Coelho.

Full back Georgia Yeoman-Dale is justifying her move from Canberra with strong performances in the opening month and on the weekend was once again creative in the back line for Newcastle Jets with her forays down the wing and matching up with Van Egmond.

Another stand out defender was Monique Iannella who has come back from injury for her first game of the season. The contest between Iannella and Dobson made for a very entertaining game.

The final goal came from a corner that was originally cleared from a header by Pedersen but which landed right in front of the waiting Dobson who volleyed it beautifully giving Barbieri little chance.

The only sour note of the day for the Jets was the fact that Ashley Spina had to be subbed at the 15 minute mark with a suspected ACL injury. Spina, alongside central defensive partner Hayley Crawford, has been a big part of the re-shaped Jets defence and her loss will be keenly felt.

For the Lady Reds it was yet again another match where they displayed promising signs.

Ross Aloisi needs to find or create that elusive attacker who can score consistently and shore up the defence a bit more. At the commencement of the season Aloisi was vocal in this Adelaide team being a 2-3 year project and, with the right guidance, they look like being a good side in a few years’ time.

For the Jets it's now about consistency. Two wins and two losses see them well in the mix for the Top 4. All across the park they are a better side than last year and with confidence high, they are a dangerous side to come up against.

Newcastle’s next match sees them playing at home against Sydney FC whom comes off a draw against Melbourne Victory, with the Victory set to play Adelaide United in their own back yard.
