2016 was a busy and productive year for the Matildas and they were rewarded for strong performances with their highest AFC and FIFA rankings.

Australia played 12 matches in 2016 against some of the top teams in the world including Brazil, Canada,  China, DPR Korea, Germany and Japan.

They finished the 12 matches with 6 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses.

The results against top 10 teams in particular powered Australia into the upper echelon of women's football nations, reaching their best ever FIFA ranking of No. 5.

They also gained the AFC number 1 ranking for the first time leapfrogging Japan and DPR Korea.

While the Olympics results in a drop to 7th, Australia eventually finished 2016 at world no. 6 and maintained their AFC ranking of 1.
