Melbourne Victory have announced the appointment of two time W-League championship winning coach Jeff Hopkins as their head coach for the 2016/17 season.

Hopkins takes over the vacant position following the departure of Dave Edmondson last season.

"Jeff arrives at Melbourne Victory with a wealth of experience both as a coach and a player, and we're excited about what he can bring to our W-League program," said Victory CEO Ian Robson.

"Last season was difficult for our W-League team in terms of results, but it provided valuable experience for our young and emerging talent.

As the inaugural coach for the Brisbane Roar, Hopkins is no stranger to the W-League with the 52 year old leading the Roar to the 2008/09 premiership and championship double and 2011 championship. For recognition of the success, Hopkins was awarded the 2009 W-League Coach of the Year.

Hopkins briefly departed the W-League to work as a coach with the Brisbane Roar Youth League team before returning last season to the W-League as Belinda Wilson's assistant coach.

"I'm looking forward to this opportunity to coach Victory's W-League team," Hopkins said.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed working with elite players, and there is no denying some of the exciting talent in the Victory squad."

Hopkins will be joined in the technical area by long time assistant coach Kat Smith.  Smith, who coached several matches last season in the absence of Edmondson, will return for a fourth season with Melbourne Victory.

"We're confident that Jeff, alongside Kat Smith, can mould the team into a successful one," Robson concluded.

Melbourne Victory supporters will be hoping Hopkins' appointment will see a return to the W-League finals after Victory finished in ninth place in the 2015/16 season, missing the finals for the first time in four seasons.

Season 9 of the W-League is anticipated to start in late October 2016.
