After 12 rounds and 15 weeks, the finals are here.

While the final round of the regular season did not have the drama of Season Five, where three teams could have still finished in the Top 4, it still had plenty of intrigue.

Brisbane Roar v Melbourne Victory: Brisbane required a four goal win over Melbourne for them to jump into third position in place of the Victorians while Melbourne needed a win if they were to have any chance of the home final.

In the end the 1-0 win for Brisbane Roar, with the goal fittingly scored by Katrina Gorry in her 50th W-League appearance, saw the status quo remain.

Sydney FC v Canberra United: The duel for the premiership saw Sydney in the box seat with the Sky Blues requiring only a draw or better to claim the regular season honours.

However, the irresistible force that is Canberra United at the moment, took the game to them and claimed their second W-League Premiership.

So the semi-finals are set.

  • Canberra United v Brisbane Roar: Saturday, 15 February - McKellar Park - Kick Off 3pm
  • Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory: Sunday, 16 February - WIN Jubilee, Kogarah - Kick Off 3pm

Each of the sides have interesting narratives.

Canberra United are the premiers who missed out on the finals completely in Season Five. This has been a season of redemption with first time W-League coach Liesbeth Migchelsen at the helm.  Canberra have built nicely throughout the season and appear to be peaking at the right time.  Can the Dutchwoman follow in the steps of her predecessor Jitka Klimkova and lead Canberra to a historic second premiership/championship double?

For Sydney FC they are looking to climb the mountain a second time. This campaign will be less arduous than Season Five where they had to wait until the final match to find out if they had booked a place in the finals, and then to travel to Brisbane and Melbourne to claim the championship.  The Sky Blues are in line for two pieces of history; the first team to claim back to back championships and the first to claim three championships.

Last year's bridesmaids and ladder leaders for a majority of the season, Melbourne Victory need to regroup if they are to capture their maiden W-League title.  While they have to travel, the good news is they won't be required to make cross country trek to Perth as they did last season. They have the personnel to cause and upset but can Dave Edmondson's side put it together to become the newest champions?

Pre-season favourites, the fourth placed Brisbane Roar now have to do it the hard way.  The good news for them is that it has been done - just last year in fact.  This will be a big test of character for Belinda Wilson's quality side.  The ingredients are there, the experience is there but can they finally put it all together for the final two games of the season?  If they can history awaits them as the first side to claim a third championship.

This is the tightest top four in the W-League's six seasons. There is no overwhelming favourite with each of the sides capable of, and have done so throughout the course of the season, defeating one another.

It's all set up to be the best finals series to date.

Let the games begin!
