W-League stalwart and championship winner Kendall Fletcher and Washington Spirit striker Katie Stengel headline the Western Sydney Wanderers international signings for the 2016/17 W-League season.
Fletcher and Stengel are joined by NWSL rookies Paige Nielsen and Alex Arlitt as new Wanderers head coach Rich Byrne continues to build a competitive squad for the Season 9.
“Our four American signings are players of fantastic calibre who align with the club’s values, the team’s values and my football philosophy”, said Byrne.
“Kendall Fletcher creates a perfect blend of youth and experience within the team, the standard of Katie Stengel’s seasons in Germany and Washington makes her a very good signing and Alex and Paige’s college resumes are of high standard.”
The highest capped international, Kendall Fletcher is a W-League veteran with over 60 appearances with the Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne Victory and Canberra United.
The versatile midfielder adds steel and experience to the Wanderers midfield or defence after winning to NWSL Shields with Seattle Reign.
Meanwhile Wanderers supporters will be hoping Stengel will be the answer to their goalscoring stutters with the 24-year-old the top goal scorer for Bayern Munich in their undefeated 2014/15 premiership season and one of the key forwards for the ladder leading NWSL side Washington Spirit.
Arlitt, who will be joining on loan after signing a multi-year deal with her NWSL club Kansas City, and Neilson, who is currently playing UEFA Champions League, will both add further quality to the new-look Wanderers’ squad.
“At the Wanderers we’re building a culture of hard-working players with a winning mentality and as a collective these four players will bring experience, lift the standard and help us achieve good performance.
Stengel, Fletcher, Arlitt and Neilson will arrive in Australia in October with the Western Sydney Wanderers set to kick off their season away to Perth Glory on 6 November 2015.
