The Westfield Matildas have suffered a blow with co-captain Kate Gill ruled out of this week’s international matches against China PR due to illness.

Gill was named co-captain in May along with Clare Polkinghorne, leaving the latter set to lead the team out on Sunday at WIN Stadium in Wollongong, and at Pirtek Stadium at Parramatta on Wednesday.

Coming into the squad is experienced Perth Glory midfielder Collette McCallum.

“It is blow to lose Kate, doubly so being a key player for us and also captain,” said Westfield Matildas Head Coach Hesterine de Reus.

“Mostly, it is disappointing for Kate herself as she was keen as always to make a contribution to the team and represent the national team.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for Collette to come into camp. She is an experienced player who will add some good qualities to the team.”

The Westfield Matildas are continuing to hone preparations for next May’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Vietnam, which doubles as qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

The Westfield Matildas, who are currently ranked 8th in the world, last faced the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup runners-up, who are ranked 16th, in an EAFF Women’s East Asian Cup qualifier in November 2012 with Australia suffering a 2-1 defeat in Shenzhen.
