When Queensland Firebirds wing attack Jemma Mi Mi steps out on the court against the Melbourne Vixens it will be a special moment.
It is the inaugural Indigenous round in the Super Netball and each team will be wearing a specially designed dress.
"The Firebirds dress feels so special when you put it on so to be able to wear an Indigenous dress that's going to be even more special to me," Mi Mi said.
"I've never played a netball game in an Indigenous dress before so it's going to be really exciting to step out on court at a home game to represent both the Firebirds and Indigenous community," she said.
Mi Mi is the only indigenous netballer currently playing in the Suncorp Super Netball competition. Her indigenous father grew up in Gayndah in the North Burnett region, which is home to the Wakka Wakka tribe.
The Firebirds match against the Vixens on Saturday afternoon will be vital to the side maintaining their position within the top four.
Queensland slipped to the fourth after a loss last weekend to the Sunshine Coast Lightning.
“Hopefully the dress will give that extra oomph out on court and that we’re going to need for a hotly contested game, but it’s going to be a really important game to solidify our spot in the top four,” said Mi Mi.
The Firebirds are three-from-three at home this season and will be aiming to keep this unbeaten record intact against a Vixens side chasing four straight wins.
