Matildas stalwart Heather Garriock has been named the new captain of the Western Sydney Wanderers for the 2013/14 W-League.
In her first season with the club, the 30 year old is excited to lead her hometown team in her return to the W-League.
"I am very flattered because there are some great girls in the squad," said Garriock.
“People think being captain is a big job whereas if you incorporate the rest of the players and get them to help you lead that’s the most important thing rather than putting the onus on one or two people."
Garriock returns to football after a year's hiatus, her first in a career spanning 15 years, and while nervous, the hard working midfielder is looking forward to being part of the Wanderers.
"I am passionate about Western Sydney," she said.
"Growing up in western Sydney, in Campbelltown, it's really close to my heart to be able to play for a club [from] where you grew up."
For Garriock the move to the Wanderers was not without some serious thought as it involved a switch from cross town rivals Sydney FC, a team she lead to a Championship in 2009.
Heavy recruiting has seen the Wanderers also add some significant experience to the squad including Matildas Alanna Kennedy and Emily van Egmond. All of this with an aim to make the finals and ultimately challenge for the championship.
"It's great to be able to have a fresh start at the Wanderers. They did well last year and we are looking to hold up the trophy this year."
"Our number one priority is come together as a team; to gel together as a squad and start playing some good football."
