Perth Glory defender Carys Hawkins has signed with Swedish first division side Umea Sodra FF.

Hawkins, who has been with the Glory since their maiden season and made 39 W-League appearances, is looking forward to playing in a competitive international league and putting a disappointing W-League season behind her.

"I've been playing with the same players having a new environment would have to help me improve," said the 23 year old.

"I have heard some good things about Umea Sodra FF but I'm not certain about a lot of things."

"I am going to be used as a defender but not sure where yet. It doesn't matter to me either way."

For Hawkins the opportunity came through keeping touch with a previous college coach.

"She [Michelle] kindly help me out in contacting the right people."

Hawkins becomes the third Glory player to head over to Europe for the winter with Collette McCallum (Lincoln Ladies) and captain Tanya Oxtoby (Doncaster Belles) both in the English Women's Super League.

"I can't speak on behalf of anyone else in my team but if more were to make the move I can see why."

"From WA it seems football is changing ,which essentially means less opportunities for those who have  been part of the program for a few years."

Welsh born Hawkins' story is one of determination as well as talent with the defender working her way through the Perth football system (including titles at State League level with the Northern Redbacks) before finding herself in the elite National Training Centre program.

Hawkins becomes another success story for the NTC program with several graduates representing Australia at underage and Matildas level. While Hawkins has yet to pull on the green and gold, the defender Is hoping time in the Swedish league will help her fulfil her full potential.
