Griffith University have lifted the 2018 University Sevens Series trophy after defeating reigning Champions University of Queensland (UQ) in the final.
Griffith's 26-19 win over UQ in the Gold medal match was their third straight of the Series as they topped the ladder with 94 points.
They entered the final day of the Series on top of the ladder but Macquire University and UQ nipping on their heels.
Griffith held the lead at half time, but a yellow card to Griffith’s Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea gave UQ an opportunity to snatch back a chance at the gold, while UQ fought hard to keep fellow Queenslanders at bay, Griffith were unstoppable.
It is the first University Sevens Series title for Griffith after finishing fifth last time.
"I’m really proud of the girls, the way they have trained and conducted themselves across the whole series has been fantastic and the win today is a good reward for everything they have done," Griffith University head coach Moana Virtue said.
“We have been working hard all year and have a good balance between senior and younger players that worked hard for each other.
“It’s been a fantastic year for Women’s Rugby and I’m really looking forward to how it continues to grow over the coming years,” he said.
