Gavrilova came close to beating Karolina Pliskova but in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo as the world No.4 won in a three-set thriller 4-6 6-4 6-4.

Having trailed the opening set 4-1, Gavrilova staged a comeback, winning five straight games to take it. The second set saw both players dueling it out before Pliskova broke and sent the match to a deciding set.

Gavrilova fought off three break points in the ninth game but Pliskova broke to make it 5-4 and close out the match in the next game.

Fellow Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic pushed Slovenian Tamara Zidansek in their match at the Korean Open to come away with a 1-6 6-2 6-3 victory. Zidansek broke in the second game of the opening set before breaking four games later to eventually serve out the set. 

However, Tomljanovic would go on to win the opening two games before winning five straight games to force the game to a decider.

Despite a small speed bump in the third set with Zidansek trying to force a comeback, Tomljanovic was able to remain steady to break again before serving out the match.

She will now face the winner of Australian Priscilla Hon and Su Jeong Jang.

Ash Barty faces wildcard Victoria Azarenka for a place in the last eight tomorrow afternoon.
