Canberra United have signed England international defender Laura Bassett for Season 10 of the W-League.

The experienced 34 year old joins Canberra United after being involved in England's recent campaign at EURO 2017 where the Lionesses made the semi finals.

“I can't wait,” said Bassett.

“I'm so excited and I am really looking forward to meeting all the staff and players at this ambitious club.”

The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender forms part of a new look defence for the Premiers with Ellie Carpenter and goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer already named.

Bassett is looking forward to her first season in Australia.

“I am eager to start training with the team so I can fully immerse myself in the playing philosophy and culture of the club,” Bassett said.

“I have only heard impressive things from players who have played in the W- League; positives such as the competitive fixtures, different playing styles and the players’ commitment and professionalism.”

Head coach Heather Garriock has looked to put together a strong defensive unit and believes the experience of the central defender can help Canberra United go one step further in Season 10.

“Laura will be the backbone to our defence this season,” Garriock said.

“She can either play centre back or holding midfield, and having a solid spine is key for this season.”

Canberra United will start their season against Melbourne Victory on 28 October 2017.
