As the W-League has grown in the past six seasons, so has it appeal.  Not just to female supporters but to male supporters.

In our travels to W-League matches we meet some dedicated male supporters of the league and thought we would chat to them about observations and thoughts.

Have you always been a football fan?

I haven't always been a football fan. I used to follow the Socceroos' progress in World Cup qualifiers but only as a semi-interested spectator.

I only became serious in the game when Adelaide United were formed, and as the years pass, I've become more and more rusted on as not only an Adelaide United fan, but as a fan and supporter of the game in general.

When was your first exposure to the W-League?

I don't think I followed the W-League much in the first season, but started to get into it in the second season when I attended a few of the home games at Hindmarsh Stadium.

What were your first impressions?

Honestly, I thought the quality was pretty poor, both in technique and in entertainment value. And that wasn't only because I was following Adelaide United at the time!

What made you turnaround to become a loyal supporter?

I stuck with it in the belief that as the league matured, so would the football being played. It took time, but I'm glad I did stick with it.

How often do you attend live games or watch on ABC?

I attend all home games for the Lady Reds. As for ABC, I prefer watching sporting events live and I have found it difficult to do so on ABC as they don't broadcast live to all centres in Australia. I did appreciate the odd live stream online that they do, as well as having full games available on iView to re-watch.

What is your favourite part of the game?

Watching the established players mixing it up with promising young players.

Have you been able to spread the word to others?

I have tried on numerous counts, but there still seems to be an ongoing stigma around that women's football in Australia is still of a poor quality.

Who is your favourite player?

Hayley Raso - quick, direct, technically sound, and has a keen eye for goal. I think Hayley has a bright future both here and abroad, and with the Matildas

Has your support translated to the Matildas?

I support the Matildas but not as much as I support my club. That's just me though, as I also support the Adelaide United men's team more than I support the Socceroos.
