Tonight the Westfield Young Matildas FIFA U20 World Cup qualification hopes go on the line as they take on China in the AFC U19 Womens Championship. Currently sitting in fourth position behind tonight's opponents, the match could play a significant part in determining which of the two sides capture the third and final AFC place on offer.
Since their comeback win against Vietnam in the opener, the Young Matildas have been unable to gain three points with close loses to DPR Korea and Japan. And while the performances have been pleasing, the lack of result, despite several chances created, has caused some frustration and disappointment within the coaching staff.
"We have been finishing games very well and coming close on a number of occasions," said Assistant Coach Nicola Williams.
"DPR Korea were a very physical side and well structured defensively making them difficult to break down."
"Japan were very well organised, they have both technical and tactical ability and awareness which enabled them to circulate the ball and maintain possession for long periods."
Yet despite that the squad enters the final two matches in good spirits and an awareness of the task at hand.
"Yes the team is aware that it is up to them to secure 6 points in our next two games," stated Williams.
"To do so we must score from our chances. Defensively we must also match them to ensure they don't score early, or at all."
Like all the AFC qualifications, it has once again been a grueling campaign played out in trying conditions. Playing games every other day in the ultra competitive Asian Confederation has take its toll. However Williams believes the squad would benefit from the extra days rest.
"This is a very tough schedule, whereby the tournament starts with 3 games in 6 days (only one rest day in-between games) and our players did look and play fatigued against Japan." she said.
"Recovery becomes important and every players loads are managed separately to get them back out for the next game."
"Hopefully today, having the extra day of rest, will help our players play afresh against China."
