Sydney FC have confirmed Matildas duo Danielle Brogan and Leena Khamis will be returning to line up with the Sky Blues for the 2013/14 W-League season.
Brogan and Khamis were both absent from Sydney FC's Championship last season due to season ending ACL injuries.
Additionally Brogan, a 25 year old defender, will captain the Sky Blues upon her return.
“It’s great to have two experienced players back in the squad,” said Head Coach Alen Stajcic.
“We were a very young team last year so bringing in some of the old heads will add strength and character to the squad, especially with Danielle who will be a great leader as our captain again.”
Despite not being available on the pitch, off the pitch the duo played a large role in the title run. Khamis as one of Stajcic's assistants and Brogan as mentor to the young Sky Blues.
For Brogan, who was captain for the 2011/12 season, a return to the field is much welcome.
“It was pretty hard watching last year, especially when the team did so well,” she said.
“I like to be one of the leaders whether I’m wearing the armband or not. Some people feel that pressure but it’s something that I actually look forward to and I tend to play better if I have more of a senior role.”
While Khamis, who is third in the W-League All Time Goalscorers, the aim is not only to return back to the top of the W-League goalscoring tree but also the Matildas.
“Firstly I just want to get my slot in the Sydney FC starting eleven back, and obviously I wouldn’t mind scoring a goal or two," said the 27 year old.
“If I can get a good season under my belt then I’d like to work myself back into that squad as well.”
Sydney FC kick off their season on 10 November 2013 with an away match against Melbourne Victory in the traditional grand final rematch.
