The winds of change continue to sweep through the Matildas with Hesterine de Reus on Wednesday confirming that two new captains had been installed.

When questioned about the Matildas leadership structure, de Reus stated that she had chosen two captains to the lead the team.  However, whether these appointments were temporary or permanent is still unclear.

"I am very happy with my choice because I think they will take a little bit of ownership and leadership in leading the group," said de Reus.

Dual captaincy would be another change that Dutchwoman has wrought in her time with the national team.  Traditionally Australia has had a sole captain with legendary figures such as Julie Dolan (the first captain), Julie Murray and Cheryl Salisbury wearing the armband.

In recent times goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri has led the team but her pregnancy and recent birth has kept her out of the national set up.

The candidates for the role are numerous with several players captaining their W-League club sides including vice-captain, and recent interim captain, Collette McCallum, Sydney FC's Kyah Simon and Brisbane Roar's Clare Polkinghorne. While long time national teams figures such as Heather Garriock, Sally Shipard and Kate Gill could be in the running.

Of the importance of the captaincy, de Reus was more forthcoming.

"If you look at the teams that are successful, the team unity that is the most important thing."

"It is not taking ownership or leadership by two people. I think everyone needs to take leadership in that area which they are good in."
