Canberra United have signed former Perth Glory goalkeeper Chantel Jones for Season 7 of the W-League.
Jones joins United following the season ending ACL injury suffered by long time goalkeeper Lydia Williams.
“We are delighted that Chantel has agreed to join Canberra United for Season 7 of the Westfield W-League,” said Canberra United CEO Heather Reid.
“Following the unfortunate injury to Lydia [Williams] we needed to move rapidly to ensure that we obtained a goalkeeper of high quality and Chantel is that kind of person."
Jones’ international caps have seen her participate in the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile and the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil.
Season 7 will be the 26 year old's second season in the W-League having lined up for Perth Glory in Season 6.
The custodian, who is currently playing for the Washington Spirit in the NWSL with new teammate Lori Lindsey, impressed on numerous occasions, even when part of a Glory defence that struggled in several matches during the season.
Jones becomes part of a Canberra defence that has regularly been one of the best in the W-League, including last season, where they conceded just 8 goals in 13 matches.
Jones arrives in Australia in September following the conclusion of the NWSL season.
Canberra United have also announced a new reserve goalkeeper in Victorian Melissa Maizels. Maizels is also no stranger to the W-League having been a third choice goalkeeper at Melbourne Victory and for Adelaide United.
“I am looking forward to training hard and starting the season as reserve so I can continue my development and work even harder to gain the starting spot if the opportunity arises.”
Maizels joins United thanks to an anticipated reshuffle of W-League goalkeepers in Season 7.
United had put out the call to their reserve goalkeeper for the past two seasons, Trudy Burke, to be their no. 1 however Burke appears to have already committed to the Western Sydney Wanderers.
That move left the Wanderers injury plagued custodian from last season, Mackenzie Arnold, looking for a starting position and The Women's Game understands that the capped Matilda has returned to former team Perth Glory.
Most of the starting positions for other sides remain relatively stable with Melissa Barbieri (Adelaide United), Brianna Davey (Melbourne Victory), Casey Dumont (Sydney FC) and Eliza Campbell (Newcastle Jets) all believed to be remaining with their respective clubs.
Meanwhile the big question is whether Nadine Angerer will return to the Brisbane Roar. While the club is remaining quiet on this, sources have told The Women's Game that Angerer, who is currently with the Portland Thorns in the NWSL, has agreed to return for one more season. Her return would be a boon for both the Roar and the W-League.
This is set to be an interesting W-League season with several big names making moves.
