It seemed as though it was going to be a tough match for the girls in orange but you could see their focus was firmly set on getting the job done. Brisbane Roar needed a win to ensure they would have a chance at a finals spot.
On the other, Melbourne Victory had posed a threat last week to Sydney FC final chances and with the way they had been playing in recent weeks, they could have possibly caused an upset again.
Brisbane Roar- Key players and points
It was again a game that was controlled by Brisbane’s own starlet, Katrina Gorry and assisted by Kirsty Yallop. They were able to control the pace of the game and create plenty of opportunities for teammates. Gorry and Yallop's command of the midfield in games is one of the reasons Brisbane Roar have a real shot at the finals and could pose a threat in the finals series.
Up front, after spending a week in Matilda’s camp, Emily Gielnik continued her red-hot form with one of the best game and was unfortunate not to score a goal. Gielnik made perfectly placed crosses, well timed runs and had shots on goal with Melissa Barbieri made to work.
Wilson's moving of Gielnik on the wing instead of centrally it has opened up the play for the team, allowing more chances on goals and space for the midfielders.
This was not the only positive to come out of the match. Developing match by match, right back Summer O’Brien held her own against Natasha Dowie and Hayley Raso, who were threats to the Roar defence.
O'Brien was not the only defender to stand out in the game on Sunday with four defenders, working as unit, proving unshakeable and forced Victory out wide and to take all their shots from outside the 18 yard box.
Despite the 3-0 score line at halftime, Roar did not look the part at the beginning of the second half. Untidy possession led to losing the ball easily and it let Melbourne Victory get on top for a spell. This will be an area coach Belinda Wilson need to work on this week during training.
Melbourne Victory – Key players and points
There is only one way to put it; this was not the season Melbourne Victory had hoped for. Now their season has come to an end, they each go their separate ways until next season.
Just as the match started, with Brisbane Roar dominating it ended just with Melissa Barbieri suffering from a dislocated finger after a clash with Clare Polkinghorne, which resulted in the fourth goal.
However, as with their season, there were positives to take out of a match. Natasha Dowie and Annabelle Martin were both potent upfront when Brisbane Roar fell asleep in patches. The duo caught Hayley Kopmeyer out a few times during corners and burst of speed from the midfield but they were unable to take advantage of the lapses.
Overall, unlike in recent weeks, it looked as though Melbourne Victory were quite not at the pace of the game and the 4-0 scoreline was indicative of one team gunning for the finals and the other with little to play for.
Up Next?
As it stands, finals qualification is all in Brisbane Roar's hands. The two time W-League champions need at least a draw when they face Newcastle Jets on Saturday to make their seventh W-League finals. While Melbourne Victory their season is over, missing out on finals for the first time in four seasons.
